Gail Owens waits on execution date to be set.
« Thread Started on Dec 11, 2009, 11:32pm »

The state attorney general's office has asked the Tennessee Supreme Court to set an execution date for one of the two women on death row.

Gaile Owens was convicted in 1986 of accessory before the fact of first-degree murder for having her husband killed in West Tennessee.

Ronald Owens was beaten to death; Sidney Porterfield was convicted of carrying out the slaying for Owens. Porterfield is also on death row.

Owens' appeals have been exhausted, and the U.S. Supreme Court denied her request for a re-hearing on Nov. 30. The state requested Tuesday that a date be set for her execution.

Owens, 57, was the first woman sentenced to death under Tennessee's 1977 death penalty law.

Her appeal was denied 2-1 by a panel of the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals last year. Her attorneys had argued that she had ineffective representation, that the state didn't turn over key evidence and that the trial judge wouldn't let her tell the jury she wanted to plead guilty in return for a life sentence.

Another woman, Christa Pike, is on death fow for killing fellow Job Corps worker Colleen Slemmer in 1995.

There have been seven executions in Tennessee since 2000, the most recent was last week. Cecil C. Johnson Jr., was executed by lethal injection for the 1980 murders of three people during a robbery at a Nashville market.

I'm not sure of the circumstances in this case but thought you all would like to hear this information, so I wanted to share it. Also, not that it matters but she has a prestigious job at the prison. She works in the warden's office and is very respected. She has never had a write up and has been an ideal inmate for many years. The reason I'm saying this is usually death row inmates are not allowed to work or is locked down.

Hi Tennessegirl23!

I just looked into some of the details surrounding this case, and Owens sounds like a very cold-blooded woman. Here is what I found on the Nashville City Paper website:

According to court documents, Owens solicited several men, in early 1985, to kill her husband before Porterfield agreed to commit the crime.

On Feb. 17, 1985, Ronald Owens was found in the family's den with his skull smashed from at least 21 blows from a tire iron. He had been beaten with so much force that fragments of his skull had been driven into his brain and his face had been driven into the floor.

Court records state that after Ronald Owens’ corpse was discovered, George James, one of the other men solicited by Owens, feared that he might be a murder suspect and went to police. James agreed to wear a wire and meet with Owens. At the meeting, Owens explained that she had her husband killed because of “bad marital problems” and paid James $60 to keep quiet, the records say.

Police listened from a nearby car and arrested Owens immediately and Porterfield soon afterwards, records show. Owens ultimately confessed to hiring, and Porterfield to committing, the murder. Porterfield stated that Owens offered him $17,000 to murder her husband, and also that he went to Owens’ house about 9 p.m. on the night of the murder, ambushed Ronald Owens in the backyard, and then fought with him until they ended up inside, where Porterfield beat Ronald Owens to death. Gaile Owens explained to the police that she had Ronald killed because “we’ve just had a bad marriage over the years, and I just felt like he had been cruel to me.” Police, at the time, said there was very little physical violence.

So, while Owens might be a model inmate, I don't think that precludes her from being punished. However, if I were a judge reviewing her case, I think her only saving grace in my eyes would be that she wanted to plead guilty in the first place. Unfortunately, the offer only applied if both she and the man she hired took the plea.

Wow, What ever happened to divorce? Most people just do that when they are unhappy in their marriage. I agree that being an ideal inmate has nothing to do with her punishment, but I thought it was kind of weird that they were allowing a death row inmate to work, that usually isn't the case to my understanding, though I maybe wrong. I know very little of this case except what I have read. When was the last time TN put a women to death and who was it?

Oh, one more thing, if i was sentence to the dp then I'd rather go ahead and die. What kind of life would it be to live in prison? Plus, it's done been over 20 years that she's been there. Sometimes it amazes me how stupid these murders are. They tell all these ppl and then even admit it to the police. Hell, if I was going to murder someone I'd try my best to keep it to myself and not tell on myself.

I agree with the keeping it to myself part! Although, one might argue that after many hours of interrogation, it is almost impossible to either keep quiet about the crime or stop yourself from simply agreeing to end the questioning.

Her life, although without freedom, doesn't seem too bad. She has a job, a place to sleep, free food -- many homeless people don't have it as good as she does! So, in her case, choosing life over being put to death is probably a good option. I don't know. If it were me, I wouldn't want to be in prison at all. That is why I don't commit crimes ;D

yes, I guess being questioned that long would get to someone but she should have never went to that many people and she may have been a free woman today. Got to say that it's for tthe best that she's locked up. I wouldn't commit that crime to be on DR anyway but living on Dr for all this time would drive me crazy, just knowing what i'd have done would be enough to make me want to die. i couldn't live myself knowing I'd have done that. Maybe he was emotionally and physically abuse and we just don't know it and that's why she done it, who knows what her motive was. People get in these messed up state of minds and aren't thinking straight.
