Currently of the 38 States with the death penalty on their books, only 5 also have laws prohibiting their death row inmates from profitting off their crime. US Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas wants this to change. He is currently pushing for passage of a national law making this blood money illegal.
Currently there are numerous websites offering these letters, drawings, and other crafts by those on death row for sale. Depending on the noteriety of the inmate the prices for their handiwork can be expensive. Many victims advocates claim this blood money is a slap in the face of the MVS and their memories, whilst many prisoner activists claim its their right under the Free Market Economy.
Should murderers be allowed to profit from their crimes ? Should murder be allowed as a business in our American Dream? What ever happened to the ag old adage of our Grandparents that "Crime never pays"?

Mixed feelings on this one. There should be NO profit or money from their crimes, such as the likes of Jack Trawick, whose sicko penpal has/had? a website dedicated to his glory and the crime, and it was anti's who petitioned (even to the extent of complaining to the FBI) about that particular doozy.
However - the other stuff, poetry, books, most of it is minor league and they get very little unless their name was Tookie Williams, is Mumia, or high-profile. You're talking small bucks. Most of these, what they're making, is saving them from asking their families for phone card money, or suchlike. Phone calls are expensive and it's the inmate who's done the crime, not his family. So, if they make money, that's where it usually goes, not on what they'd deem luxuries. There's no condoning their crimes, but if they have some kind of talent and they're willing to try to use it to save their families the burdens, maybe, yes.
Irregardless of what they use it for however, they are profitting from the crime of murder. I have no real support for the law, I believe it is well intented but perhaps a bit unneeded as well. Texas inmates are banned from such profits and seem to have no problem staying in touch with their armies of fans, so that pretty much ends the burden argument for me...obviously the fans do not mind the burden. Personally rather than pass laws to stop the sell of their mundane poetry I would prefer some laws against the other forms of murderabilia out here. Does a death row inmate need penpal ads all over the net? Do they need myspace pages? Do they need "special visits" just cause some chick from Finland was dumb enough to fly to Texas to see him? I believe if the law adequately addressed the true problems there would be a less profitable outlet for the junk they write or draw thereby negating the need for this law to begin with.

by the way since i am on it...why doesnt the government spend more money on stopping crimes, reforming individuals, etc....as opposed to who is buying or allegedly selling items......individuals understandably get upset when seeing a letter for sale, but what about ann rules books, all the true crime books, and in all reality how much is a serial killer going to make? and in reality probably 1 in 10 actually recieve a dime they are promised.....what we really need to see are hard facts from US Senator John Cornyn, show some commisary slips from berkowitz or other high profile killers....not to mention every state has a limit of commisary allowances....plus states like AL have rules on who can send funds no matter what....sort of neat on how andy kahan and US Senator John Cornyn are both from texas and battling the same issue.....and how many victims families recieve money from these states that have victim rights foundations? where are those tallies?

Haha....good post Rev. Ugh...you mentioned Andy Kahan....blah! But, anyways, you are right, I believe the majority of the murderers don't receive any compensation for the things that are sold...and IF they do, it is not much I am sure.
seriously: I think Obama should have made them liquidate all their assets both business AND PERSONAL so they could climb over their own pile of s***; instead of expecting the American tax payers to do it.

seriously: Wake up people! Don't you realize that WE THE PEOPLE don't need the rich, THEY NEED US...to do the work that makes them richer so they don't have to clean their own toilets; and all we get is industrialized meats and crops, GMO's, antibiotic resistance.

seriously: Patented seed crops, running small farmer's out of business, toxic waste, poisoned water, dirty air, deforestation, global warming. By the way, who even wants to live in a GLOBAL GOVERNMENT world with a GLOBAL ECONOMY?

seriously: America should be more like Switzerland, fix our own 'broken wagon' and let the rest of the world fix theirs...it's not an U.S.A. problem. Screw oil, it pollutes the earth...GO SOLAR, WIND, WATER POWER! Screw the utility companies!

seriously: That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Best way to topple the rich...eliminate money and go back to the barter system; let the rich wipe their own bums and clean their own toilets...for a change! No more "Groom of the stool" for them.
