Accused Ax Murderer Trial Begins Today-- POSTED: 4:53 am EST January 22, 2007
Ax killer Simpson
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A grieving family in 1999 with just one question: why? More than seven years later, that question still unanswered.
The families of murder victims Archie Crook, Sr., and his pregnant girlfriend Kimberli Kimbler are waiting for justice. A wait they hope will soon be over.
The trial for the accused killer begins today with jury selection. Jason Simpson is accused of killing the couple with an ax.
It was Crook’s father who discovered the bodies in 1999.
“I went over to get him to go to work and I found him dead,” he said.
After all these years, it’s a case so gruesome, it’s hard for many to forget. Still, many more people wonder why it’s taken so long to go to trial.
One factor is that Simpson wasn't charged until December 2002, when he was indicted by a grand jury. But Simpson’s attorney says there are many reasons this is moving at a snail's pace.
“There are DNA issues, there are witness issues, state witnesses, federal witnesses,” said Simpson’s defense attorney Refik Eler.
Coordinating all of that for a death penalty trial takes a lot of time. Through those, the victims’ families have stayed on top of the case. They’ve been going to court for every hearing, waiting for the day when they can get some closure.
Prosecution Lays Out Case In Double Ax Slaying-- POSTED: 3:06 pm EST January 23, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A jury was seated Tuesday and opening statements began in the trial of Jason Simpson, accused of beating two people to death with an ax more than seven years ago.
Archie Crook Sr. and his pregnant girlfriend, Kimberly Kimbler, were killed in 1999.
"Asleep, unarmed, vulnerable," prosecutor Melissa Nelson said, describing the victims to the jury. "Archie Crook and Kim Kimbler were quite literally chopped to death with an ax."
It wasn't until December 2002 that Simpson was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder.
Police said Simpson knew Crook, and that both were involved with illegal drugs.
Simpon's defense will try to convince the jury that another killed Crook because he was cooperating with police in a case against another drug dealer.
"'That baby will not see the light of day.' That's what Archie Crook Jr. boldly and brashly proclaimed on more than one occasion in front of family," Simpson's defense attorney, Refik Eler, said in his opening statement.
The prosecution said that DNA evidence from the crime scene was found on an article of Simpson's clothes, but the defense claims that clothing was stolen from Simpson before the homicides occurred.
The state has said they will seek the death penalty if Simpson is convicted.
Jury Finds Simpson Guilty Of Double Ax-Slaying-- January 29, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jurors took only two hours Monday afternoon to convict Jason Simpson of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of a man and a woman more than seven years ago.
Simpson, 33, was accused of killing Archie Crook Sr. and Kimberli Kimbler with an ax in their Westside home in July 1999. Kimbler was eight months pregnant when she was killed.
The deliberations followed four days of testimony last week that included statements from two convicted criminals who said they had heard Simpson admit to the killings.
The defendant, along with Crook and many people called to testify during the trial, were involved in the sale of illegal drugs. Prosecutors told the jury that Simpson had become an informant for Jacksonville police, and the prosecution said he killed Crook to keep that secret from getting out.
The defense called the defendant to the stand, along with relatives of Crook who claimed to hear his son, Archie Crook Jr., threaten to kill them both over having a baby.
Double Murderer Sentenced To Death-- February 6, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Duval County jurors needed only about an hour on Monday afternoon to decide that a man convicted of killing a man and woman with an ax in 1999 should be executed for the crimes.
Jason Simpson, 33, was convicted last month of the murders of Archie Crook Sr. and his girlfriend, Kimberli Kimbler, in their Westside home. Kimbler was eight months pregnant when she was killed.
Simpson, along with Crook and many of those called to testify during the trial, were involved in the sale of illegal drugs. Prosecutors told the jury that Simpson had become an informant for Jacksonville police, and the prosecution said he killed Crook to keep that secret from getting out.
During the one-week trial, the jury heard testimony from two convicted criminals who said they had heard Simpson admit to the killings.
The jury recommendation ended the penalty phase of the trial. A formal sentencing date has not been scheduled.
Ax Murder Gets the Death Penalty-- Last Update: Mar 29, 2007 10:18 PM
Killer was formally sentenced today.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man, who was convicted of murdering a couple and their unborn child with an ax, received the death penalty Thursday. Jason Simpson stood emotionless in front of the judge as he was being sentenced.
“You have forfeited your right to live among us,” Judge Charles Arnold said. “Under Florida Law, you have forfeited your right to live at all.”
That moment had been a long time coming for the families of Kimberli Kimbler and her boyfriend, Archie Cook, Sr.
Simpson murdered the couple and their unborn child in 1999 with an ax, and at the time of those killings, he was on felony probation.
So far, Simpson’s defense attorneys have not made any comments about an appeal.
