Clarence Carter, a 49-year-old Ohio man convicted of beating to death another prison inmate after a dispute over what TV channel to watch, was executed on Tuesday morning.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said the time of death was 10:25 local time. Carter's last words included an apology to the family of his victim.
"If someone is here from Johnny Allen's family, let them know that I'm sorry for what I did, especially to his mother," Carter said. "I ask God's forgiveness and their forgiveness."
Carter was the 12th person executed in the United States this year and the third in Ohio. He was the second person in Ohio this year to die from a drug cocktail that included pentobarbital, a barbiturate commonly used to euthanize pets.
Carter was in prison in December 1988 awaiting sentencing on his conviction for killing Michael Hadnot. One mid-December evening, Carter got into an argument with Allen over what to watch on television, and Carter punched Allen in the face, according to prosecutors.
On December 28, Carter struck and kicked Allen for up to 25 minutes, stopping twice to wipe blood from his sneakers, according to prosecutors. Allen died after two weeks.
Carter claimed he was acting in self-defense, as Allen had come after him with a "shank" -- a knife made in prison.
On his last night alive, Carter watched television, prayed and wrote letters, said Carlo LoParo, spokesman for the Ohio agency.
Carter did not request any special last meal and had the same dinner as the rest of the prison population: tuna salad, oven brown potatoes, turnip greens, an orange and wheat bread, according to department spokeswoman JoEllen Smith.
In the morning, Carter met with clergy and his brother, Lamarck Carter. He asked Lamarck to "bring God into your life."
Ohio started using pentobarbital due to a shortage of sodium thiopental. Hospira Inc. of Illinois said in January it would stop making the drug after Italy, where it planned to move production, objected, citing its use in executions.

seriously: I think Obama should have made them liquidate all their assets both business AND PERSONAL so they could climb over their own pile of s***; instead of expecting the American tax payers to do it.
